The power of the placebo … in action!

I'm sure you will have heard of the placebo effect. If not, in a nut shell, it's a sugar / talc 'nothing' pill that every drug on the market has been tested against before it is allowed to be used as a medicine. It, the placebo, almost always has healing properties equal to most drugs on the market, even surpassing some. If you've never heard of it, research it, you'll be amazed.

Anyway, this little story is about my experience with the placebo. Firstly, you need to know that I've been trying to cure myself by changing my belief system and I've been lacking confidence that I could do it. But, something happened yesterday that has convinced me otherwise and that is what my story is about.

Eckhart Tolle believes we create and maintain problems because they give us a sense of identity. Perhaps this explains why we often hold onto our pain far beyond its ability to serve us.

We replay past mistakes over and over again in our head, allowing feelings of shame and regret to shape our actions in the present. We cling to frustration and worry about the future, as if the act of fixation somehow gives us power. We hold stress in our minds and bodies, potentially creating serious health issues, and accept that state of tension as the norm.

Though it may sound simple, Ajahn Chah’s advice speaks volumes.

"Two monks were on a pilgrimage. One day, they came to a deep river. At the edge of the river, a young woman sat weeping because she was afraid to cross the river without help. She begged the two monks to help her. The younger monk turned his back. The members of their order were forbidden to touch a woman.

But the older monk picked up the woman without a word and carried her across the river. He put her down on the far side and continued his journey. The younger monk came after him, scolding him and berating him for breaking his vows. He went on this way for a long time.

Finally, at the end of the day the older monk turned to the younger one. "I only carried her across the river. You have been carrying her all day."
